The AAN has learned that UnitedHealthcare (UHC) will implement an important change in their commercial Radiology Notification program. Beginning February 15, 2010, they will include Premium Quality and Cost Efficiency designated physicians in this program. This change will simplify the program by having the same administrative requirements for all physicians.

Prior notification will be required for all physicians on the following outpatient imaging procedures: CT scans, MRIs, MRAs, PET scans, and nuclear medicine studies, including nuclear cardiology. For dates of service prior to February 15, 2010, Premium Quality and Cost Efficiency designated physicians are not required to obtain notification.

The following states are not currently subject to UHC's Radiology Notification Program: AK, CT, ID, MN, MT, ND,NE, NJ, NY, OR, RI, SD, WA, and WY. This notice is to be considered informational.

Refer to the UHC's announcement for more information about these changes.
