Following its announcement to eliminate consultation service codes, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued an article for providers giving guidance when consultations are no longer recognized by Medicare beginning January 1, 2010.

Under this new change, providers should code a patient evaluation and management visit with E/M codes that correspond to where the visit occurs and identify the complexity of the visit performed on or after January 1, 2010. This article applies only to physicians who are billing the Medicare fee-for-service program.
