NPI: A Work in Progress

In an effort to help iron out problems with inconsistent information between National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) and the IRS database, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) are mailing out letters to organization health care providers whose information doesn't match. These letters request that the health care providers review and update their Legal Business Name (LBN) and/or employer identification number (EIN) in NPPES. If health care providers cannot furnish data that are consistent with the IRS, CMS will deactivate the National Provider Identifier in NPPES. CMS will continue to match these health care provider data in NPPES against IRS data to ensure the accuracy of NPPES data.
