The AAN has published the evidence-based guideline "Clinical Evaluation and Treatment of Transverse Myelitis" which assesses the best available methods to evaluate and treat this rare nervous system disorder that involves inflammation of an area of the spinal cord.

The guideline was published online ahead of print on December 7, 2011, and in print in the December 13, 2011, issue of Neurology®.

The guideline recommends that plasma exchange may help treat people with acute transverse myelitis (TM) who are not helped by steroid therapy. Testing for an autoimmune response to aquaporin-4–specific antibodies can help find the cause of acute TM. This testing can also help predict risk of a TM relapse.

To learn more about additional recommendations, read the guideline and access PDF summaries for clinicians and patients, a slide presentation, and a clinical example.
