Visa resources

Please plan ahead to ensure you meet the visa and travel requirements to enter the United States. It is strongly encouraged to apply for your visa as soon as possible, as there may be long wait times for visa processing and interviews.

The American Academy of Neurology is unable to assist with visa processing or interviews and cannot influence the decision to issue a visa. The links and resources below are provided to help you navigate this process.

Do I need a visa to travel to the United States?

Non-US residents traveling to the United States and attending a professional conference are considered business visitors and must have a Visitor Visa (B) unless qualified for entry under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).

Where do I apply for a visa to Enter the United States?

Visit the Visitor Visa site for general information and processing times. Consult your US Embassy to determine how to apply for a visa in your country.

Visa Waiver Program

The United States Department of Homeland Security requires travelers from Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries to apply for travel authorization at least 72 hours prior to departure through its Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

Request a Letter of Invitation/Announcement

The AAN offers a Letter of Announcement that you may include as part of your visa application to attend the AAN’s Annual Meeting or regional conferences. Letters of announcement can be issued only for the person attending the meeting and are not available for guests of attendees. Each attendee must request their own letter and cannot request a letter for someone else.

Note that obtaining a Letter of Announcement does not guarantee that your visa application will be approved. Please contact your local embassy or consulate if you have any questions regarding the visa process.
