For Lisa Shulman, M.D., and Bruce Polsky, CEO of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Press, creating the Neurology Now Books series has been a labor of love-and a way of fulfilling the Academy's mission to promote the highest quality patient-centered care. Each title is written with a team of experts who answer patients' most pressing questions. We really want our books to be empowering, says Dr. Shulman, the series editor. During my own growth as a physician, I realized that people with chronic illnesses-and most neurological illnesses are chronic-need to be actively involved in their care. When you think about it, how often is your doctor with you? That's why self-management is so important.
An offshoot of Neurology Now, the series will cover topics known to be of interest to Neurology Now readers. We saw that migraine/headache, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson's disease are three areas of high interest, so we have decided to cover those initially. Dr. Shulman also looks to the expertise of AAN members for inspiration. For example, one member of the Academy is an expert in smell and taste disorders-both as a doctor and a patient-so our first book, coming out this summer, is called Take Your Doctor with You: Prescriptions for Problems with Smell and Taste by Ronald DeVere, M.D. It's really exciting-the book includes lots of recipes and food preparation tips.
In keeping with the patient focus, Dr. Shulman is open to ideas from readers. What information do you need? she asks. What kinds of skills can we discuss that will help you be better manage life with a chronic illness? Readers can e-mail ideas to neurologynowbooks@aan.com or mail a letter to: AAN Press, American Academy of Neurology, 1080 Montreal Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55116.
