As a part of the AAN's ongoing effort to bring better recognition of the value of cognitive care services, the Academy has compiled recent literature demonstrating the value of neurologic care into two documents: Compelling Neurologic Statistics and Evidence of High Quality Cost Efficient Neurologic Care.

Studies show that neurologists provide the highest quality care for patients suffering from chronic neurologic conditions. Neurologists also are more accurate than non-neurologists in their diagnosis of neurologic conditions and, consequently, limit costs associated with unnecessary testing and prolonged hospitalization.

Although statistics show an increase in demand for high quality neurologic care, the supply of neurologic workforce is falling and the shortage can be traced, in part, back to a systematic under-appreciation of cognitive care services.
