Members looking for a refresher on evaluation and management in coding—or looking to train new staff—should look no further than "The ABCs of E/M," a new Academy practice management webinar scheduled for Tuesday, June 14, at 12:00 p.m. Eastern time.
The 90-minute webinar provides physicians 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™, and non-neurologists receive a certificate of completion redeemable for credits. The deadline to register is June 10.
Program director Bruce H. Cohen, MD, FAAN, will help participants understand how to appropriately code patient visits, gain confidence in coding and billing for complex services, and use the Academy's E/M templates.
"The goal of billing properly is to work within the rules of the system so that the physician can do their part in the reimbursement process, making sure the charges are justified by the work performed during the patient encounter," said Cohen. "However, the rules for proper coding are so complex that business schools offer degrees in medical coding—and not unlike the profession of neurology—there are professional boards for professional medical coders."
Cohen warned against the dangers of coding improperly.
"Most practices do not have professional coders assign the bill, but require the physician to determine the correct CPT code. Even small missing elements expose the claim to non-payment—or worse—a charge of fraud, especially if the same mistake is replicated with repeat chart audits."
Cohen explained that common pitfalls include not using a template that has been properly screened for missing elements in the history or physical examination. "Other times, a physician may believe the complexity of the encounter is more intricate than what would be justified by rules, or submit only one level of service for every new or established patient," said Cohen.
Cohen said that the importance of considering using time-based charges for those patients who require more counseling and less time obtaining a history and physical exam will be addressed in the webinar.
