The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has indicated that there have been some instances of the National Provider Identifier (NPI) being stripped from claims submitted through some clearinghouses.
CMS is urging eligible physicians submitting claims through a clearinghouse to check with their clearinghouse to ensure the NPI is not being stripped from their claims. If it is determined that the NPI is being stripped from the claim forms, the physician may want to consider other billing options.
