AAN State Affairs Committee member and Colorado Medical Society President, Lynn Parry, MD, appeared recently with US Congressman Ed Perlmutter (D-Colorado) in support of the Epilepsy Centers of Excellence Act of 2007 (H.R 2818). Parry and Perlmutter held a press conference in early July to promote the importance of establishing the centers.

H.R. 2818 authorizes the Department of Veterans Affairs to establish six Epilepsy Centers of Excellence nationwide to provide optimal care for veterans with epilepsy. This care will range from diagnosis and treatment to surgery and research. A substantial number of veterans with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) are expected to develop epilepsy and require specialized treatment.

"Creating Epilepsy Centers of Excellence will lead to not only improved care for our veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, but also provide more awareness of the need for research and care for those with TBI and epilepsy," said Parry.

The Library of Congress lists the bill’s cosponsors online. View the bill's cosponsors to see if there is one in your area, or visit the AAN's issue page on TBI care for veterans for more details and tools to help you contact Congress on this topic.
