AAN Addresses Neurologic Care Implications in letter to HHS Secretary

June 8, 2010

The Academy has submitted a letter to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius regarding the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA) urging the Secretary to bear in mind that physicians such as neurologists, who provide cognitive care for patients with high-cost chronic conditions, are increasingly unable to meet the needs of this growing patient population.

The letter specifically highlights the recent elimination of Evaluation and Management (E/M) consultation codes, as a survey of our members indicated that 34% of respondents (934 responses) will avoid treating very complex patients.

Other highlights include:

  • Establishment of Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation within CMS
  • Misvalued Codes under the Physician Fee Schedule
  • Modification of Equipment Utilization Factor for Advanced Imaging Services
  • Independent Medicare Advisory Board
  • Expanding Access to Primary Care Services and General Surgery Services
