Get Free Resources to Explain January 1 Consultation Code Changes

The AAN is committed to providing free resources for members that will prepare them for upcoming changes to the Medicare 2010 Physician Fee Schedule, which include the use of new practice-expense data and the elimination of payment for consultation codes as of January 1, 2010.

While the Academy and several other specialties strongly opposed the proposed change, CMS has finalized this policy, which will impact members' practices. However, during initial talks with the Academy, large national private insurance companies revealed that they do not have planned changes to their reimbursement scheme for E/M services as of January 1, and that, unlike CMS, they will continue to reimburse providers for consultation service codes at contracted rates to start 2010.

To help with the transition, the AAN is providing free information about these upcoming changes and what the AAN has done to oppose them—as well as free tools to help members determine the financial impact to their practices—on the Consult Codes Information page.

For those seeking a deeper understanding of the issue, the AAN is also offering a recording of its Tuesday, December 8, 2009, webinar with coding experts for $149. To purchase, visit the AAN Store.
