The mission of the Academy is to be "indispensable to its members." One way the Academy fulfills this mission is by representing of neurology in the halls of Congress. Capitol Hill Report presents regular updates on legislative action and how the AAN ensures that the voice of neurology is heard on Capitol Hill. The Academy's legislative counsel in Washington, DC, Mike Amery, offers weekly updates on advocacy for neurology and neurologic concerns.

With the end of May, Congress is nearing the midpoint of the legislative year and was on recess last week. I continued to meet with staff from key committees this week to discuss the Academy's goals for health reform. This weekend I am heading to Louisville, KY, for a medical specialty political action committee forum. At this event I'll have the opportunity to discuss health reform with Congressman Brett Guthrie (R-KY).

For a review of congressional efforts on health reform for the first half, the May 27, 2009, On the Issues from National Journal's American Health Line provides a great summary. (In order to access the complete article, use the AHL's signup page for a free trial subscription.)
