On May 8, 2009, the Academy Board of Directors voted to approve a model medical policy developed by a workgroup of members of the Medical Economics and Management Committee (MEM) of the Academy on Magnetoencephalography (MEG). The document explains MEG, summarizes available localization techniques, compares intraoperative techniques, and provides a critical evaluation of MEG as a diagnostic technology, as well as outlining indications and sharing limitations of the technology. The document also provides appropriate procedural and diagnostic coding guidance with relation to the technology.
The Academy hopes that insurers will adopt some or all of the principles outlined in this model medical policy in their own individual policy development.
