Former member of the AAN Board of Directors Susan S. Spencer, MD, FAAN, passed away suddenly on May 21. Spencer served on the board from 2001 to 2003, and was a past chair of the Clinical Research Subcommittee. She also served on the Science Committee, Neurology® Editorial Board, and AAN Foundation Research Council, among others.
Spencer was a professor of neurology and neurosurgery and co-director of the Yale Epilepsy Program with her husband, Dennis D. Spencer, MD, chair of the Department of Neurosurgery. She was a world-renowned expert in the treatment of epilepsy and was widely regarded for her major contributions to research in the field. Spencer also was a past president of the American Epilepsy Society (AES) and the recipient of numerous awards, including the highly prestigious AES Clinical Research Award. She was vice-president of the American Neurological Association in 2001.
Along with her husband, Spencer is survived by two daughters, both of whom are pursuing careers in medicine.
