Epilepsy Legislation Advances in US Senate; NIH Funding Vetoed

On November 14, the US Senate Veterans Affairs Committee approved S.2004, a bill developed with AAN support which would create six Epilepsy Centers of Excellence within the VA healthcare system. The AAN will now work to secure final passage by the full Senate. The House version of the bill will be considered by the House Veterans' Affairs committee in early 2008.

The previous day, the FY2008 Labor/HHS Appropriations bill was vetoed, which included an AAN-endorsed 2.9 percent increase in funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Congress is unlikely to override the veto, making the prognosis for next year's NIH research funding unclear.
